1949 Kewanee Athletics
Kewanee, Illinois 61443
The Kewanee Athletics Travel Baseball Organization began in 2014 with just one team. The goal of this team was to create a competitive travel baseball organization for the Kewanee area that could celebrate and once again represent the rich baseball tradition of Kewanee. As seen below, Kewanee once drew massive crowds at Northeast Park for baseball games. People would come from all around to watch baseball games. Northeast Park was one of the first baseball fields to install lights for games. It is said that the average attendance for baseball games in the summer of 1932 was four to five-thousand people. The overall attendance for the summer of 1932 was reported at 111,500 fans.
The founders of the Kewanee A's felt it was necessary to honor our past teams and chose the name of the Kewanee A's. The original A's were a Kewanee based minor league affiliate of the Philadelphia Athletics. The professional team last played in Kewanee in 1949. Pictured below is the team photo for the 1949 Kewanee A's. Our organization has revived their name and are carrying on the tradition of high quality local baseball. We currently have five teams in our organization and are looking forward to having that number increase each year. The Kewanee A's will strive to develop competitive baseball players while maintaining a high level of sportsmanship. The Kewanee A's will continue to grow and look forward to more parents and players joining our baseball family.
